Introduction: Understanding the Concept of Jariyah

In Islam, the most virtuous deeds are not only those that benefit oneself, but those whose benefits continue to flow to others, even after we have passed away. This is known as Sadaqah Jariyah (Continuous Charity). The Prophet Muhammad (peace be upon him) said:

“When a man dies, his deeds come to an end except for three things: Sadaqah Jariyah (continuous charity), knowledge from which benefit is gained, or a righteous child who prays for him.” (Sahih Muslim)

These three things are the everlasting investment for the Hereafter. In the modern context, the role of a Webmaster (website administrator) directly and powerfully touches two of these three things: Beneficial Knowledge and Continuous Charity.

How is a Webmaster Included in the Act of Sadaqah Jariyah?

A webmaster’s role today is far greater than just a ‘technical person’. They are the gatekeepers of knowledge, facilitators of good, and builders of infrastructure for da’wah. Their contribution becomes Sadaqah Jariyah based on the intention, content, and impact of the website they manage.

1. The Webmaster as a Provider of Beneficial Knowledge (Ilmun Yantafi’u Bih)

  • Building Platforms of Knowledge: A webmaster who builds and manages an Islamic educational website, a portal of hadith, articles on fiqh, lectures by scholars, or tutorials on modern Muslim life is directly facilitating access to knowledge. Every line of code written, every layout optimized, is to ensure knowledge is delivered clearly and easily.
  • A Facilitator of Da’wah: Imagine a website hosting lectures in video, audio, and transcript form. The webmaster ensures the server functions well, content is downloadable, and the user interface is friendly. Every time someone watches, understands, and practices knowledge from that site, the webmaster who facilitated the process earns a share of the reward without diminishing the reward of the knowledge provider.

2. The Webmaster as a Contributor to Continuous Charity (Sadaqatin Jariyah)

A managed website is like a digital endowment (Waqf). It is an asset that continues to ‘live’ and provide benefit.

  • Building Infrastructure for Good: If a philanthropist builds a physical library (which is Sadaqah Jariyah), a webmaster builds a ‘digital library’. The cost invested in the domain, hosting, and website security is a charity whose benefits continue as long as the website is accessed.
  • Ensuring the Platform’s Sustainability: Maintenance tasks like updating software, fixing bugs, and supporting users are acts of worship. It is like maintaining a waqf building so it doesn’t deteriorate and remains safe to use. Without careful maintenance, a website can ‘break’ (get infected, go down) and knowledge becomes inaccessible.

3. The Webmaster as a Caller to Goodness (Da’wah)

  • Optimizing Good Content (SEO): A webmaster’s task includes practicing good SEO (Search Engine Optimization). When someone searches for queries like “how to pray sunnah prayers”, “rights of husbands and wives in Islam”, or “income zakat”, the website managed by a Muslim webmaster appears in the top search results. This indirectly becomes da’wah bil hal (da’wah through action). The webmaster has ‘shown the path’ to goodness for millions of internet users.
  • Preventing Evil: By providing a platform for authentic knowledge, the webmaster helps combat the spread of misinformation, slander, and deviant teachings on the internet. This is a form of enjoining good and forbidding evil that is highly relevant today.

Intention: The Key to the Blessing of Sadaqah Jariyah

Of course, for all these technical tasks to be counted as worship and Jariyah, intention plays the most crucial role. A webmaster must have a sincere intention:

  • Lillahi Ta’ala: Purely for the pleasure of Allah SWT.
  • Intention to Help: To make it easier for the Ummah to gain knowledge and worship.
  • Intention for Da’wah: To spread the message of Islam in the digital realm.

Conclusion: Coding for the Hereafter

A webmaster does not necessarily have to be an ustaz or a religious scholar. They can be IT professionals who use their skills in the cause of Allah. Every time they write code, solve a server issue, or update an article, they are essentially ‘coding’ endless rewards of Jariyah.

They are the unsung heroes behind the scenes who ensure the light of Islamic knowledge continues to shine in the digital space. Their work is proof that Islam is relevant in all eras, and every skill—even technical ones—can be converted into valuable currency for the Hereafter if channeled with a sincere intention.

So, blessed are the Muslim webmasters. Your effort, toil, and investment in building and maintaining beneficial websites are a form of Modern Sadaqah Jariyah that is highly encouraged in Islam. Continue your contribution, for its reward will continue to flow as long as people keep clicking, reading, and benefiting from it.
